Getting around: the land of free transport
Free trains, trams and buses since 2020, strategic P+Rs, booming cycling: optimising your journeys in the Greater Region.
Free, really
Since 29 February 2020, all Luxembourg public transport is free in 2nd class — CFL trains, tram, RGTR and communal buses. No ticket to validate inside the country. Only cross-border journeys cost money, and only for the foreign portion: a Thionville–Luxembourg trip is paid up to the border, free after.
The P+R strategy
The most profitable cross-border reflex: park at the first Luxembourg P+R and finish by free train or tram. Rodange and Kleinbettingen on the Belgian side, Frisange and Bettembourg on the French side, Wasserbillig and Mertert on the German side. They fill early (often before 7:30 for the busiest) — your choice of city determines which P+R you can reach before it saturates.
Tram, bike and what's next
The tram now links Cloche d'Or to Kirchberg via the station and centre, a backbone reshuffling the capital's housing map. The express cycle network (PC1–PC38 paths, the southern cycle route towards Belval) grows yearly, and a fast tram line to Esch is under study. In our transport scores, these investments already weigh on the communes they cross.
