Getting Luxembourgish nationality
5 years' residence, the Sproochentest, the 'Living together' course: the real path to the passport, dual nationality included.
The main route: naturalisation
Since the 2017 reform, five years of legal residence suffice (the final year uninterrupted). Dual nationality is fully accepted: you keep your original passport if your country allows it. The file goes through the commune and the Ministry of Justice; expect several months of processing, criminal record included.
The Sproochentest, the step to prepare
The Luxembourgish exam requires A2 speaking and B1 listening comprehension. That's achievable in one to two years of evening classes — the INL and most communes offer them, and language leave (200 hours) is a statutory right for employees. Start early: this is the timetable's real bottleneck.
The other routes
The 'Living together in the Grand Duchy' course (or its exam) completes the file. Simplified routes exist: marriage to a Luxembourger (same Sproochentest), children born in the country (birthright at majority under residence conditions), and the 'option' procedure for certain family cases. Pre-1900 Luxembourgish ancestry opened a recovery route, closed since 2018.
