The extremes of the perimeter
What these figures say, and what they do not
All 127 communes in the perimeter exceed the WHO annual guideline for PM2.5 of 5 µg/m³ — as does almost all of western Europe. None exceeds the EU limit values in force.
The gap between the cleanest and the most loaded commune in the perimeter is 2.7 µg/m³ of PM2.5. It is a real north-south gradient — the Éislek breathes better than the Moselle valley — but tight enough that a rank is interesting while a 0.2 difference between two communes is not.
How these figures are built
These are model output, not station measurements. Station density differs sharply between the four countries, so a commune's value would otherwise depend on whether anyone put a monitor there. CAMS covers the whole Greater Region on one grid, which makes the 127 communes comparable — the same reason ERA5 carries the climate axis.
The cost of that: CAMS resolves about 11 km, so these are regional background levels. Neighbouring villages share a cell, and an address beside the A31 breathes worse than its commune's figure. Useful for placing a commune in the perimeter, wrong for a specific street.
